Blokada plot

The longest siege during World War II was at Leningrad. Hitler tried to starve the Soviet city of 3 million inhabitants for 900 days. Blockade is a narration of this event, by dividing the story into passages and using cleaned archive material we find ourselves in this horrible situation.

Sergey Loznitsa gathered images from a then unexplored Soviet archive about the siege of what was then Leningrad. There is no explanation, but the film does tell the story of a society completely derailed by the siege. The trams are still running in the first half of the film. But it goes quiet after that. For a while longer, the streets are teeming with people scraping together things to survive. But that too is decreasing. People become more passive, have lost their will. Until they hear bangs from their own army that has to drive out the occupier. Just a little too short to really get under my skin. But the casualness with which you realize for a moment how horrific it is that you see does make an impression. just a child's corpse, or abandoned toys or a house shot to pieces
