Deer Woman plot
A police officer who has fallen into disrepair is only allowed to deal with matters concerning (domestic) animals. And certainly no more with murder cases. Coincidentally, a truck driver appears to have been killed by a deer. His colleagues don't believe this theory, but he manages to convince them anyway by citing the comparable London 'Wolfman' case from 1981.

Brian Benben is fun as the washed-up middle-aged cop and Cinthia Moura is amusing as the silent deer monster. In itself, there was certainly potential for a strong 'creature feature' here, but too much time is wasted on unfunny conversations at the police station and with the coroner. The result is a soulless affair that fails to become either suspenseful or scary, because it spends a lot of time on trivialities while the monster in question poses no threat whatsoever. The premise of an Indian myth coming to life in contemporary America—where even the Indians no longer believe in that nonsense—could have yielded a much funnier film than what was achieved.

And once again, an excellent movie. I never expect much from them, but they always turn out much better than expected. Taking the running time into account, which limits the director's ability to employ the desired techniques, Landis creates an atmospheric and suspenseful whole here. Here too, I can't give anything less than a 7. On to the next one!

Director John Landis is absolutely the right man for this type of pulp story, which can be brought to life under his direction with the right amount of crudeness. Yet it is the police side of Deer Woman that works better, featuring, for a change, a credible lead performance by Brian Benben. The dialogue is delivered convincingly and the mythological backdrop holds the audience's attention, but when it finally needs to kick off, Deer Woman falls short. The special effects are underutilized and the way Cinthia Moura kills her victims is not exactly convincing either. All in all, a very half-hearted result.
