Lawyer Lloyd Pearson has been murdered and there is a strong suspicion that the gambler Moroni committed the murder, but he has a watertight alibi. Moroni was with Brad McKay, a star reporter at the Chronicle that night. Publisher Norris sends Brad McKay and his son Guy Norris to investigate the murder case. Brad learns that Moroni did commit the murder, but sees no way to prove it. Moroni tells Brad that the killer was paid for the murder (a payoff) and that the lawyer was killed by his assistant Hugh Walker as a result of an argument. John Angus, owner of the Li Ho Club, tells Moroni that Brad McKay suspects him.
