Splendor plot

"Explore the possibilities..."

Veronica enters into a relationship with two men. The first is the sensitive Abel, a failed journalist. The other is the sexually insatiable Zed, drummer in a punk rock band. The two completely different men move in with Veronica and they start a love triangle. An almost brotherly friendship develops between the men, but over time Veronica becomes estranged from the riotous, childish pair. Veronica gets pregnant, but doesn't know who the father is. Then she falls for the charms of a successful director.

Nice, original story in a film that didn't work out so well. The storytelling style wasn't necessary because it doesn't add much. The same applies to the conscious overacting at times. Camera work is original at times.

This is what happened when Araki made a movie with no sharp edges. For a long time it seems as if he replaced a boy with a girl in one of his lesser scripts. Until there's a pregnancy and a near-marriage in the movie. In the end, it's mostly an average romantic comedy with a choice between an insufferable jerk of a man and not one but two nice guys who get lucky as a gimmick. And films that tried to be hip in 1999 also have a nice nostalgic edge. It had also been about 20 years since I had thought of Lionrock. The film is saved by Araki's self-assured fin de siecle tone and the candy colors that we often saw with him. But Araki's punky side is sorely missed here. The least movie I've seen of him.
