"Truth is more shocking than fiction."
Brooks Baekeland (Stephen Dillane) is the grandson of the immensely wealthy inventor of an early type of plastic. But when the family fortune begins to dwindle, he decides to marry the wealthy Barbara Daly (Julianne Moore). They have a child named Anthony, who later in life turns out to be homosexual. Partly because of this, he gets entangled in a major conflict with his parents.
