Side Street plot

"Where temptation lurks!"

Postman Joe Norson steals a fallen envelope containing $30,000. What Joe doesn't realize is that this stolen money was meant to pay off in an extortion case. Regretted for this theft, Joe tries to return the envelope with money to the lawyer, the addressee of the envelope. However, because he is involved in the extortion case, the lawyer pretends not to know anything about the money. Joe leaves the money with a good friend, who quietly takes it off. The blackmailers track down Joe and force him to hand over his friend to them. However, it is nowhere to be found. Joe finds himself in a life-and-death struggle with these blackmailers, culminating in a wild car chase through the streets of Manhattan, New York.

Outside the top in this genre there is of course a lot of middle class and let's say "below middle class". This one follows a bit of the well-known pattern, not really all that special, but with a very nice chase through southern Manhattan at the end, never seen like this in a film from that time.

Farley Granger plays Joe Norson, a mailman trying to keep himself financially on a very modest income, and his heavily pregnant wife Ellen [Cathy O'Donnell]. When he finds $200 in a file of a dubious lawyer, he decides to steal the file a little later. With the money he wants to pay for that holiday to Europe that Ellen has been looking forward to for so long. No sooner said than done, until Joe opens the package and discovers that it contains a whopping $30,000! In a panic, he leaves the package with a bartender friend who thinks it contains a gift for Ellen. Things get bigger when it turns out Joe stole money from a criminal and both the bartender and the money have disappeared!

Great thriller with film noir elements. Granger plays (as in the two Hitchcock films) the role of a man who, due to an error of judgement, gets into trouble that is over his head. Sidney Boehm's screenplay contains enough twists to keep the suspense going and the use of authentic locations in New York - where a beautiful chase scene was also filmed - is an extra reason to watch this highly entertaining film.

The opening sequence with the overview of New York is told in voice over from the point of view of the police. Surprisingly enough, the police are ultimately not involved and the story is told almost entirely from the point of view of the criminal on the run. Besides crime, the film certainly also has a good dose of social drama. Farley Granger gets off cheaply after his hellish trip. Although the other leading role is played by Cathy O'Donnell, she doesn't really steal the show. She is therefore an accommodating and sweet character. More interesting is Jean Hagen in the role of a nightclub singer and as a type of femme fatale. As usual with this type she has to die.

Excellently portrayed by Mann & co. The visual highlight is undoubtedly the car chase from different camera angles (also from a height of tens of meters). Definitely an entertaining movie.
