Stellet Licht plot

Stellet Licht is set in a strictly religious, pacifist Mennonite community in northern Mexico. These Protestants, originally from the Netherlands, from Friesland, live according to the norms and values of their very traditional faith. Johan is a married man - father of six children - who falls in love with another woman. He fights against his feelings: should he betray his wife or sacrifice his true love?

Not exactly my thing this. The atmosphere eludes me and I see the characters more as caricatures than as real figures, so that the essence is lost in my opinion. The beautiful cinematography is praised here. I'm not crazy about that either. It is nicely and appropriately done, but it does not impress.

Aside from the plot, I was particularly intrigued by the scene with Jacques Brel on TV. But that was the wrong light I'm afraid. Although I have to admit that the bath scene made up for a lot.

A very special drama film about a closed religious community in Mexico. Mennonites are followers of Menno Simons from Friesland. Language in the film is Plautdietsch. Strong symbolism with a 5 min sunrise at the beginning and a 5 min sunset at the end. Beautiful with all those animal sounds! It is a silent film, there is not much spoken. Slow tempo with long silent scenes, so be patient. Beautiful bath scene with the kids and a heartbreaking rain scene. Cinematography is breathtaking with beautiful nature, stunning views and beautiful colors! The subject is heavy and controversial, especially for a community with traditional norms and values..... Very realistic acting of the amateur players. I noticed that Esther and Marianne looked very similar, was that coincidence or not? The ending may indeed be meant metaphorically, but that is up to the viewer's own experience.....

Intriguing film about a strict religious community. We follow a man Johan who struggles with the dilemma of love. He loves another woman and therefore does not know how to choose between her and his wife with whom he has six children.

What is striking is the gentleness that accompanies this. You would expect in these conservative circles that he would be banned or disowned, but no. Respect for each other seems to be of paramount importance. The film then focuses on other points.

The film is very slow with many stylistic images. The environment is also often included in the whole with many landscape images. Little communication also between the actors, a lot of silences where it all becomes very observant. It also shows the coldness and aloofness in the community. Minimalist cinema, but captivating enough to follow. The whole thing doesn't convince me to see it as a masterpiece, but I was happy to see this. That foreign language was nice too. Makes it all just a little more authentic.
