Suspicion plot
"In his arms she felt safety...in his absence, haunting dread!"
Lina McLaidlaw meets Johnnie Aysgarth and soon falls in love with him. They marry, but it never becomes clear to Lina where Johnnie gets his money. Also, having a strange interest in poisons, Lina starts to have second thoughts about Johnnie's character. Then a friend and business partner of Johnnie's mysteriously dies.

Hitchcock's setback. Of course, his films mainly rely on the story and the suspense. Both elements are not present in this film. The plot is told from Joan Fontaine's point of view and that doesn't make it any more interesting. After a moment of hesitation, she continues to believe in the goodness of the too smooth Cary Grant. It irritated me, because I expected her to back down a lot more and not suffer so idly by Grant's umpteenth lies for no reason. It doesn't want to be exciting either. So a pity.
On the other hand, Suspicion isn't nearly that bad. The typical Hitchcock style features, such as a train scene, a large villa on his film noirs and a climax just before the end of the film remain a joy to watch. Unfortunately, other characteristics, such as a paranoid atmosphere and ambiguity of what is going on, were too much missing.

Yet another Hitchcock that has not quite withstood the test of time. The film is somehow fun and the story certainly offers possibilities. At first I still enjoyed all the corny stuff; the idyllic gardens and houses, but also the cheerful Disney music. The acting is excellent. I already knew Cary Grant from North By Northwest. Great to see him play the charmer. The opening in the train may also be there again. What I did find funny is that in a film from 1941 it is very easy to travel to Paris and Venice
Hitchcock, in my view, fails to build the suspense. How the relationship develops is actually more fun to watch than where the story is building up. In the second half I had a hard time keeping the focus. They work thinly towards the denouement. A lock that, incidentally, was still a bit disappointing. Suspicion couldn't have ended much worse in my opinion.

Suspicion is one of two Hitchcock films for which he received an Oscar nomination for best picture. That mainly means that he doesn't really show his well-known direction here, but delivers a film that fits better in what people normally expected in Hollywood. As a result, the film is not immediately a Rear Window or North by Northwest, but it is certainly not a bad film. The story is of course an asset where the viewer is constantly in doubt about the true facts. The art of Hitchcock is that he has also been able to translate that to the big canvas. Both Cary Grant and Joan Fontaine (not coincidentally, the other Oscar-nominated Hitchcock film was also with her: Rebecca) are both in shape and a pleasure to watch them perform. Both actors also have British roots, which makes the characters' English background more believable. Creatively, this may not be one of the best films from the master of suspense, but certainly not a bad film and a recommended viewing tip for fans of the Hollywood film from the 30s and 40s.
