Enchanted plot

"This fairytale princess is about to meet a real Prince Charming."

In the perfect animation world, a sorceress queen rules until her stepson finds a woman. When he accidentally meets a naive girl in the forest, he immediately asks her to marry him. However, due to her future mother-in-law, she ends up in present-day New York, where she obviously doesn't know what to do. But then she meets an attractive young father and her world changes dramatically. However, her Prince Charming has followed her, as has a servant of the evil queen, who throws her plans into chaos. Then she decides to put an end to the intended idyll between her stepson and the forest girl.

Enchanted, enchanted

This magical place that we've found

No one here but us and the sound

Of the stars and the night owls

Your breath and the rolling clouds

Enchanted, I am, by you

I was on the bus back to Groningen and doubted whether I would watch another movie in the afternoon. "Murder Wives" and the unknown to me "Enchanted" were my only options. Suddenly *this* song comes up from my iPod (Enchanted by Patrick Wolf). Well, if *that* isn't a sign...

So I sat completely unprepared among the giggling teenage girls and fathers with children, staring at the screen. After ten minutes the doubt; am I really going to watch this? Well, I'm here anyway...

And then, from the moment Giselle steps into the real world, the click comes. Wonderfully feel-good Disney romance with a truly delightful Adams splashing off the screen, the singalong in the park, for example, is finger licking good. Dempsey is also excellent in this naive fairy tale.

Only minus points for the indeed somewhat long intro and the unnecessary final scene with the dragon, which really didn't fit the atmosphere at all I thought. In all a surprising, fun afternoon. 3.5*.

Now love has come to me

And set separate tea

From all of the maddening crowds

The orchard is leaning her bows

To hear our laughter

And we roll in the arder

Enchanted, I am, by you

“And so, they all lived happily ever after.”

The joy radiates from this film. Love is central and is discussed in all its gradations. The unrestrained, boundless, unbiased and somewhat naive side of love clashes with the cynical side in a fun way.

Amy Adams represents the happy side of love and does it sublimely. She radiates from the screen, her surprise at so much cynicism when it comes to love, makes for the best scenes. Dempsey represents the cynical side and makes a nice duo with Adams. The fairytale part and the music should have been left out, but I understand why this was chosen. The ending is also a bit strange (the dragon) but okay, it is a film with so much cheerfulness forgiven.

Nice concept; fairytale characters in the real world. It provides some very nice aspects. Adams and Marsden are perfectly cast as princess and prince. I have the feeling that the film would come across better with slightly tighter direction and editing, especially with more sense of timing. The ending is definitely over the top but you can easily forgive that in this film that is a kind of parody of fairy tales anyway. Yet I am not very enthusiastic; large parts feel too random and sometimes even a bit boring while the film has a fairly short running time. Nice for once, but certainly not a great one.
