If you add up the numbers from my score you end up at 6, divide this by 2 and you have 3, put these numbers next to each other and you get damn close to 23. However, this doesn't really matter. Carrey mumbles herself throughout the film and is not convincing for a moment. Visually there is sometimes something to experience, but the story never dragged me along. I was mainly wondering how long it would take for the hell something to happen, which unfortunately didn't happen.

The story is in my opinion far from ingenious, although I will undoubtedly have missed something important because of my many yawning attacks. For now, I'll just say The Number 23 is a pretentious but hopelessly uninteresting film.

The Number 23 is one of those interchangeable thrillers that everyone will forget after a few months. The only memorable thing about the film is the fact that this is one of those projects in which Jim Carrey takes on a serious role. And Carrey is not the problem with this film anyway, that is mainly due to the script. The first 45 minutes of the film is actually quite fine, a decent set-up with a couple of likeable actors (Virginia Madsen is always good). But the more the script explains, the more uninteresting it becomes. At some point you can feel that the slot will be full of the twists and it is. While a simple, straightforward thriller would probably have been better. We probably wouldn't have had a hugely memorable thriller yet, but one that won't swing towards the end.

2.5 stars.

hmm.

Interesting concept with an even more interesting protagonist. You wouldn't immediately think that an actor like Jim Carrey is really suited to play roles like this one. Still, he has played in good roles over the years that don't just push him into comedic corners. Number 23 is his attempt at a dark thriller.

He does not really manage to keep up in this, although that is not necessarily Carrey's fault. He lacks some charisma, but delivers his dialogues properly and never gets boring. It's the uninteresting script that makes him a boring character. While the story does its best to make it all unpredictable, I mostly wondered why they didn't use all the elements for it. So there are some very good points, and some dramatic points.

By means of some interesting filters and tricks, it is visually brightened up a bit, but I actually found the core a bit boring. The concept might intrigue me, but the craziness and mystery just didn't seem to get any closer with this course. The fact that the film then even seems almost imaginative at times, doesn't really help with that.

It does not look very nice, but fortunately the film is not without its surprises and the decorations are successful. In terms of cinematography, it's a really nice film, but that's about it. A shame on Carrey actually, just an actor who should make you shine. This film prefers to keep him in his cage, but that just goes to show that this doesn't work very well.
