When Julie LaVerne and her husband Steve Baker are forced to leave the showboat 'Cotton Blossom' (their marriage is illegal because Julie is a half-breed), their show is taken over by Magnolia Hawks, the captain's daughter, and Gaylord Ravenal, a gambler. Magnolia and Gaylord fall in love, get married and move to Chicago. There they live on the money Gaylord has won by gambling. When they're broke, Gaylord leaves her guilt-ridden, unaware that she's pregnant.
