Nice... a real picaresque film. Two petty criminals put pressure on a crime syndicate by constantly robbing them. Lots of action and good roles from Duvall and Baker, who do what they do for a lot of money partly out of revenge and partly out of temptation. Only everything is a bit too smooth for the duo, as One Ring also indicates; the robbers run smoothly every time and the ease with which they get into the villa of the "mob boss" at the end is just too much. Fortunately, this action film from the Dirty Harry period is not dusty and musty; certainly looks good and is a fine example of an early exploitation film.

And another fine crime film from the rough seventies. Today they sometimes want to get lost in all kinds of strange curves, Flynn on the other hand always does it right, straight forward and straight to the point. A fatalistic wind is blowing, although it never really turns into a storm and for a moment someone has to update the viewer, but then Duvall and his companion go on the hunt for some form of justice without batting an eyelid.

Nice no-nonsense characters, cold-blooded, goal-oriented and free of doubts and fears when they take on the mob. Iron-eaters that women find useful as long as they don't complain or interfere in everything. A scene like the one with the blonde slut could have been removed from the film, but I wouldn't have wanted to miss it for the world. Corrective and other taps, some gunplay, heists, and a finale where Flynn tries to ramp up the tension. Necessary? Nah. Fun? Yes.

"A more than solid crime flick." is the title of my Imdb review from 7 years ago that I'll translate for MoMe for the occasion:

I don't think I've ever seen Robert Duvall as a real bad-ass gangster, but here he is. Unsurprisingly, he handles the task well and makes it a tough one, almost always keeping a good mood in the face of bad circumstances. Almost always, because when he starts abusing his girlfriend it quickly turns into a nasty display. In the 1970s that might have been interpreted as a way to 'calm down his girl', but nowadays that flier is no longer valid.

The "girl" in this one is none other than a personal favorite: Karen Black. The other major supporting role is superbly played by Joe Don Baker, who I think is an unusually likeable character compared to what I know of him, although he's still a gangster.

The movie is nicely fast paced and not very complicated, with a plot that focuses on blind revenge and collecting as much money as possible from a large criminal organization responsible for the murder of the brother of the main character. Few surprises, but interesting enough and the ending is quite surprisingly 'happy', almost like a crime caper. I like the best in this one.

A neat 8.

4 out of 4 found this useful.
