The Maid plot
Every year, during the seventh month of the Chinese calendar, hell opens its gates. For thirty days the dead were around among the living. This is a very dangerous time and many rules must be followed in order not to fall into the hands of the dead. For Rosa Dimaano, newly arrived in Singapore, this is all superstition. The 18-year-old Filipino girl goes to work for the friendly couple Teo. Their mentally handicapped son immediately becomes attached to Rosa. It soon becomes apparent that the Teo family is a little bit eccentric. Their large, old house contains many closed doors and rooms filled with Chinese opera costumes. They have strange habits and even stranger visitors. Rosa begins to see and hear things that terrify her. Unwittingly, she has broken the rules of the seventh month and the dead are after her.
