One of the better Fassbinders, although the length of the film really tested my patience. For me, this film had to rely on the strong and fascinating last hour. This film had some very nice scenes such as the performance of the play Lili Marleen to the sounds of the German soldier's song "Oh Du Schöner Westerwald" and the song "Lili Marleen" of course, immediately followed by the scene in the establishment with the sounds from the song "Trouble" by Elvis Presley. A greater contrast in terms of music is hardly imaginable. Visually, I also thought this film, which perfectly captured the early seventies atmosphere, was quite beautiful. Moreover, given the S/F theme that was treated, this film was also far ahead of its time. Maybe I should see or review more of Fassbinder's films, because as far as the latter is concerned, his film "Angst Essen Seele Auf" which I first saw about twenty years ago I thought was a terrible film.

A 1973 science fiction film about humans created in a computer world. A subject that was certainly very special for that year, where computers were indeed still futuristic large devices. But now, 50 years later, that subject is of course hopelessly outdated. And now it's a really lame story. Excruciatingly slow and while probably meant to be exciting, it is anything but. The film lasts three and a half hours. Can't get through. I started the movie this morning and took several breaks because otherwise I couldn't keep my attention on the movie. It is now well into the afternoon. But I did watch him. I'm going to assume that it's because of the subject and the story, because I have a high regard for Fassbinder. Actually, the most interesting thing about the film is the image of what it was like in 1973. And with science fiction, this one certainly, that seems to come out even more strongly than with films set in that time. It's not just the decorations and the cars here. But also the strange synthesizer effects with the newest synthesizer for that year. Probably a modular moog or an ARP 2500. Or the VCS3 of course. There was also plenty of smoking. And you could drink alcohol as much as you wanted in a movie back then. And in Germany probably all the way. Finally, this film also made it clear that women at that time only had one function. Please the man. I don't think I'll ever see this movie again.
