Marie Antoinette plot

"A Queen... but, first of all... a woman in love!"

Marie Antoinette, daughter of the Austrian Empress Theresa, is betrothed by her mother to the Prince of France. Once she arrives in France and finds that her not-so-great fiancé is rather dull, she moves from one party to the next, leaving scandals behind. But even arguing with the king about her wild life cannot thwart the marriage. Once she is queen, her past continues to haunt her, between the revolution and all kinds of family feuds.

Beautiful film about the frivolous, but ultimately tragic life of perhaps the most famous French queen. It seems that the similarities between the story and what actually happened are more or less coincidental. That does not prevent director Van Dyke II from making a fascinating film, which is much better than the 2006 film of the same name with Kirsten Dunst. This is mainly the merit of a sublime Norma Shearer and Robert Morley in a role that is somewhat atypical for him. Tyrone Power actually has no more than a glorified supporting role, but that's not so bad because his acting in this film is quite mediocre. I estimate that couturier Adrian made a fortune with the beautiful dresses in this film. Cedric Gibbons' settings are also a feast for the eyes. All very beautiful.

We thought it was a boring movie. Not much explanation was given about the war that was going on while Marie Antoinette was wasting all the king's money. Sometimes the film surprised us, for example when she cheated on the king with Count Fersen.

I had already seen the 2006 remake of the same name with Dunst, but I thought this was just as good in terms of drama.

Actually, the film gets better as it goes on, and that certainly applies to Norma Shearer's acting.

But Robert Morley should not go unmentioned either, he gives a strong portrayal of the rather stupid and at the same time tragic character of the king.
