More fun than I thought!

Although Hugh Grant's career was already on the back burner at the time, he is once again doing a fine job. His role is as he has played it before; the stammering, but always charming sulk, this time in the form of a sidelined pop star.

I expected some typical rom-com clichés, but fortunately they were largely absent. The witty remarks and jokes were well dosed and the humor never became bland or annoying.

The supporting roles are also excellent. I thought I recognized two old comedy actors whose names I don't know (they played in Everybody Loves Raymond and 3rd Rock from the Sun, if I'm not mistaken).

“Lyrics are important. They're just not as important as melody.”

You should watch this movie for that great first scene alone. A very wrong but incredibly catchy pop song combined with Grant in an incredibly wrong outfit with terrible hair. A nice introduction to a more than entertaining film.

The story is not very special and after a good start it goes down nicely, but the actors and the music obscure a lot. Grant and Barrymore have a nice chemistry and Grant in particular is clearly looking forward to it. Bennett is also hilarious as a pop star who makes terrible music, which of course sells like a charm. The ending is very sweet, but that's part of it and I didn't expect anything else. Nice movie.
