Benny and Eve leave their hometown of Knockglen to study at the University of Dublin. An old friend, Nan, puts them in touch with Jack Foley, the rugby union captain and local girl magnet. A special friendship grows between Jack and Benny, which overflows into love. Jack finds a soul mate in Benny - not just another handsome punch, but someone with whom he can take endless walks while talking. Jack is unique to Benny: she loves him, but those feelings of love are suppressed at home by her parents, who run a small clothing store and want to arrange a marriage between their daughter and the bookkeeper.
