I accidentally got into this film through TV channel ONS. England at the end of the 19th century was all I knew in advance. I was terrified at the first images. How corny this was. Still, I stuck around, and habituation set in. The story and the acting of the lead actor in particular turned out wonderfully well. The meeting with Kathie was the much-needed twist, but unfortunately a dramatic incident followed all too quickly. The boarding school with all its vicissitudes was shaken up by world events, but Mr Chips, as a Latin teacher, held up like a rock in the surf. I casually heard him say "Festina Lente" and read in the subtitles "hurriedly slowly." Or words to a similar effect.

Finally I now know where my very strict math teacher got his pet peeve "Make haste slowly" from.

Anyway, a very enjoyable film.

Beautifully captured in the time frame of the late 19th century and the early 20th century. Breaking old patterns that are also encouraged by the woman, good role of Hamilton, of Mr. Chips, beautifully played by Clunes, and providing the cracks in the old school system. Keynote: "An individual person is not the nation"
