Jude dreams about studying in the big city. Before he knows it, however, he is married to a farmer's daughter and condemned to village life. When his wife suddenly leaves, he sees his chance: he goes to work and study at Christminster. There he meets his niece Sue. The two become excellent friends. They decide not to give in to the crush that follows. Sue plunges into a marriage to an elderly teacher and Jude returns home...
