Yeah, Jesus, what a weird movie.
Nice way of presenting film, seems nice and unique to me.
The story didn't interest me one bit. It was just a bizarre spectacle with the occasional nice stop-motion animation.

Some fun moments here and there, though with a brilliant final chapter.Drill a hole in the doll and have a good shag. Turns out later to be some kind of devil. Awesome.
The rest isn't much to write home about and is too long-winded.

This isn't the Faust everyone speaks so highly of, is it?

This review concerns the English-spoken version.

Partially animated version of the Faust legend, in which a man sells his soul to the devil, uses various adaptations of this story as a source, including a puppet version. "Faust" begins as silent, pure cinema, until protagonist Faust [Petr Cpek] quotes a line of dialogue from a play in a theater. From that moment on, this is an inimitable rollercoaster ride in which Svankmajer—the master of the puppet film—treats you to imaginative, absurd, surreal, but ever-captivating sequences in a beautifully filmed, sharply edited masterpiece.

This film is truly a feast for the eyes, cinema at its purest and very best. The loose structure does make it a bit confusing, even for those who have seen other adaptations, but this is such a unique experience that you must see it whenever you get the chance!

A typical Svankmajer. The animation master creates something beautiful again with a minimal budget. Combining puppetry, clay animation, and stop motion, I don't think there is another filmmaker who does it quite like this. At times it seems a bit like the thread of the story is missing, and in terms of pacing, it takes a little getting used to, especially at the beginning. But it is so cool; I can really enjoy it. It is all totally absurd. Sometimes it is so strange and symbolic, but all in all, it is worth the effort.

The story is classic: a man makes a deal with the devil for his soul. He tries to fool the devil, and a cat-and-mouse game begins. You don't need any more of a story, and that slim 90 minutes of playtime is just wonderfully enjoyable. 4*
