After the battle in 1916 against Pancho Villa, four men are nominated for an award. Major Thomas Thorn (Gary Cooper) who recommends them is not a hero himself, but rather a philosopher of sorts. He is recalled to Cordura and must take a prisoner with him. This prisoner is Adelaide Geary (Rita Hayworth), who has hidden enemies during the battle. During the journey, however, the true nature of the four heroes is revealed and Thorn is able to show that he is not a coward.
