Cheh!

Richard Harrison, a white man in a Shaw Bros. film, actually. That immediately captures the most striking element of this film. Because otherwise, it's, of course, classic Shaw Bros. all the time.

Oh, so the masters don't want to take on students to teach them martial arts, but they do have a few "jobs" in their monastery the gentlemen are allowed to do. Uh-huh. For anyone who might still doubt it, The Karate Kid isn't exactly the most original film. The first half hour is spent, as usual, on the setup, the second half hour on training, and by the end, everyone is free to fight anything, with all the new tricks on display.

The final battle is, as always, top-notch. It's also funny to see a white character in these films, however insignificant it may be. The story is simple, but that's true of almost every Shaw Bros. film, and just when things threaten to drag, the ending invariably appears, speeding things up.

Vintage Shaw Bros., then. Not particularly flashy, but entertaining.

3.0*

Seen on Blu-ray of Eureka. A Chinese version of the story about Marco Polo, the explorer who mapped parts of Asia under the guidance of the Mongolian Emperor Khan. When one of the five brothers is murdered, the other four seek revenge. They become apprentices to learn the ultimate style: Golden Bell Armor, which protects the body from stabbing weapons and arrows. This allows them to fight the armies of the Mongol Empire.

Shaw fans will see plenty of familiar faces.
