I also picked this up on TV and found it to be spurned. Especially the first part was well presented, the second part was a bit less for me, then the film was more dramatic.

In terms of cast, we certainly couldn't complain and they came across convincingly. I also thought the music was worth mentioning.

Still worth a look.

Beautiful story, great acting by Gere and Molina, and beautiful moments when reality and fantasy intertwine (Gere dressing as Hughes is "kidnapping" Nassau). Probably more meaningful for Americans because Clifford Irving may still be a "famous American" to many and Howard Hughes a figure of mythical proportions, but as a Dutchman I also enjoyed watching this, and it's always nice to see Eli Wallach again even though his role here was very small (for a moment I thought that at the end of the film it might turn out that he himself had actually been Howard Hughes all along without Gere and Molina realizing it[/spoiler ]). Besides The aviator there is also Melvin and Howard (1980) by Jonathan Demme, with Jason Robards as (maybe) Hughes.

Been a while since I saw this movie. It is also a typical film that I watched 'in between'. Lasse Hallström would make the gripping Hachi: A Dog's Tale a few years after this film with Gere, so I was still curious about this earlier collaboration.

The Hoax is a straightforward feature film. Based on the plot, you can determine well in advance what kind of film it is and whether you will find it interesting. Apparently it is based on a true story. With this in mind, there were some scenes that made me wonder ('could this really have happened this way?'). I don't know how close they eventually got to reality, but the main problem I ran into was that the film failed to keep my attention constantly.

The movie is interesting, then collapses again and then gets a little more exciting (especially when Irving goes through setbacks). In this way it actually goes on continuously. In any case, I think the film could have been shortened a bit, as it felt a bit long-winded in the end. On the other hand, there is a strong performance from the cast. Richard Gere plays his lead role with ease, but the supporting actors are also convincing. In addition, the decoration of the film is well taken care of. It is credible that the actors imagine themselves in the 70s.

Curious about the outcome, I watched the film without too much trouble. This is certainly not a high flyer, and colors are neatly within the lines. This does not alter the fact that The Hoax serves as a Sunday evening 'filler'.

3*
