Gray medium.

Pathfinder is more than once reminiscent of Apocalypto. The storyline - as far as you can call it a storyline - is also about a native tribe that is being hunted.

Pathfinder therefore does not offer much news: the tension is not exactly manageable and the Indian whining about "choose your own path" etc. seems to be a mandatory number.

A (more or less) well-known face has been cast in Karl Urban, but there is nothing in the way of acting here. Apart from some roaring and fighting, the cast does nothing. With Moon Bloodgood there is still a minimum of eye candy around.

Although Pathfinder looks decent as an action-packed adventure film, it all looks seriously amateurish. Especially the way too dark lighting stands out. The camera work itself is not that bad, the nature images are quite beautiful and the sets detailed, but it is hardly to enjoy because everything is so terribly dark.

2.5

Vikings vs Indians definitely sounds more original than Vikings vs a monster or something like that. However, the story was so banal that no advantage is taken from this pre-interesting-looking combination. With two such unique peoples I expected that they would shed some light on this, but unfortunately nothing could be further from the truth. If they replaced Vikings and Indians with two other peoples, they could still stick to the same dialogues.

Pluses are that the Vikings looked intimidating and menacing, the dark moments with ''scare moments'' in the cave, among other things, appealed to me in terms of filming and the scene where the Indians fell into their own trap (the most unexpected for me moment in the movie). For pure one and a half hours of entertainment, there is actually not much wrong with this film, maybe my expectations were too high..

Unfortunately, this film turned out to be a bigger task than I thought beforehand. I had hoped for a smooth action film, but then suddenly I get a very raw, heavy film that is slow in almost everything. Unfortunately, I wasn't exactly in the mood for that.

But I can't deny Nispel that it looks solid visually. Nice look, nice cinematography. Without the visual aspect, this would have been quite a task, but Nispel manages to get a lot done with it, resulting in a pleasant look.

Too bad the action isn't too exciting. Pretty much every scene is in slow motion when it comes to action. The fights are very clumsy, and above all very boring. Nispel gets it all only moderately in the picture. Messy camera use interspersed with exaggerated slow-motion use. It doesn't change well at all.

Also, not the best timing throughout the film. The film is quite heavy and slow, and in the first half hour I started to lose hope a bit. In the end we get a bit more pace in the last half hour, because the first hour just didn't want to get off the ground.

This is usually due to the poorly portrayed action and unintimidating Vikings. That alternates with a nice, raw look, but it doesn't make the film any more fun. Unfortunately, but I did look at the clock several times to see when it was over. I probably like Nispel better in his horror films.
