Never Say Die plot

"Did Your Wife Bring Her Boy Friend On Your Honeymoon? Martha Did! ...Can You Guess Which One He Is?"

A wealthy tycoon is mistakenly told that he has only one month to live. That's why he wants to enjoy life for the last month. He dumps his troublesome fiancée and leaves for the beautiful Bad Gaswasser Spa in Switzerland. There he meets a young lady who is forced to marry a prince, although she is in love with a bus driver. The ailing magnate marries the girl so that, after his death, she will inherit his wealth and can marry whomever she pleases. However, during the honeymoon, where the bus driver accompanies them, it turns out that the diagnosis was wrong and the magnate's death will take some time. And then, much to the shock of the bus driver, the newlyweds really fall in love with each other.

Bob Hope who once again gets into his dorky character, it's all a bit too much sometimes.

This time he plays a very rich man with serious hypogondry tendencies who is chased by one

gold digger .

To avoid her, he marries someone else and because he thinks he only has a short time to live due to a false diagnosis, it no longer matters to him.

A bit of a far-fetched theme to build a comedy around, but the film still has its nice moments.

After their supporting roles in College Swing a year earlier, Bob Hope and Martha Raye were given the chance to try their hand as "headliners" here, now with a real (albeit extremely farcical) plot. The story isn't much to speak of, but it gives Hope the opportunity to perfect his barrage of one-liners; Martha Raye is energetic and funny (and, to my taste, sexy too); they have chemistry together; there is a great supporting cast as if the studio (Paramount) pulled out all the stops to groom Hope and Raye for stardom; and the fairly predictable plot ambles along at a decent pace. Later that year, this director gave Gale Sondergaard (here the woman coveting Hope's millions) the tasty role of Miss Lu in The Cat and the Canary, and that film sealed Hope's status as a movie star and box office draw (and thus justified Paramount's efforts); Martha Raye's career got off to a somewhat harder start. As for Never say die, because Bob Hope is completely his usual nervous coward / flawed lover / fast-talking smooth talker here, I can really only recommend this film if you aren't overly sensitive to that; personally, I am a big fan of the first decade of Hope's career, so I watched this with great pleasure.
