Hanna Schygulla is as always charming and convincing in her role. This time of a woman who remains faithful to her love in difficult circumstances and always detaches herself in a clever way from life-threatening involvement.

Fassbinder stages it all beautifully, repeatedly underlining the stark contrast between the delivery of a popular tune and the bloody horror of war and allowing the passages to follow one another smoothly, both the serious, Nazi-laden, the romantic and the exuberant party scenes.

John Steinbeck once said of Lili Marleen that this was the only good thing that Nazi Germany gave to the world. Fassbinder sketches a biographical portrait based on Lale Andersen, the original singer of the famous song, who is called Willie in the film. Before the war, she had a relationship with a Jewish resistance fighter, Robert, who had already fled to Switzerland with his family and was actively involved in a resistance network. When war broke out, the lovers were separated. Robert stayed in Switzerland and Willie made a career in Germany with a song that actually had little musical significance, but unexpectedly inspired nostalgic and patriotic feelings in the soldiers at the front, and even became an international success. But during that entire period her heart continued to yearn for her lover, while she was cheered by the Nazi potentates and became a figurehead who conveyed pride and loyalty within the armed forces.

I have to say that my opinion is somewhat divided about this film. At its core, this is a simple love story about a love that has become impossible due to the war situation. But I did not find this side of the film interesting. You also have to struggle through this annoying song several times, which gave me a bit of a headache towards the end from this Lili Marleen song. Much more interesting was Willie's role in helping the resistance by smuggling photos of the concentration camps into the country. Unfortunately, almost nothing is done with this at all. The direction is quite classical and even theatrical at times, not as daring and experimental as other works of his, but always with a focus on manipulating the feelings of his characters. Especially the latter makes his films worthwhile. How Willie becomes an instrument in the hands of others. Interesting film but I don't need to see it again.
