Good film about a high-class gigolo who starts a relationship with the wife of a senator. The plot takes a while to get introduced, but that's not a big deal as it mainly revolves around the main character (and this one is interesting anyway). Stylish decor and reasonably atmospheric. Richard Gere is not only well cast, but also plays a great role.

Richard Gere's first breakthrough role, as a socialite gigolo accused of murdering one of his clients. You can always expect detailed character analyzes from Schrader, and that is what you get when themes such as social classes and lovelessness are touched upon. His encounter with the unfortunate wife of a senator stirs up feelings in him, which he has repressed for the sake of his "job". I liked the thriller aspect otherwise the film would have been a bit too boring. Also indicates that the rich people he hangs out with soon don't know him anymore to protect their own reputation. Thought it was a pretty good movie that didn't disappoint me. Featuring the famous Blondie/Giorgio Moroder collaboration on the soundtrack.

Nice try.

But failed miserably. More than a thriller - which I actually expected - they serve a kind of character sketch of a lonely escort. I once heard my mother say that she couldn't get enough of Richard Gere in her adolescence in the 1980s, so he must have been well cast in that area. But I find him anything but charismatic. Some will find it hypothermic, I find it rather dull and stiff.

Unfortunately, that's something the whole movie suffers from: it never really seems to come off. Some tension is hard to find, let alone that there is an intriguing interplay between any of the characters. American Gigolo is stiff. Too stiff for my taste.

1,5
