Hooray for the legs. Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. The BBC can't get enough of them.

Now Fred as a psychiatrist-dancer...hypnotist. Pretty funny.

Irving Berlin is the composer of the beautiful "Change Partners," whose lyrics fit the story perfectly. Beautiful.

Smooth Astaire/Rogers based on the age-old formula.

While there may be some differences in emphasis here and there, the films certainly aren't that different. Once again, there's plenty of attention to humor (which is rather dry), a few dance and song sequences, and above all, plenty of lightheartedness. And, of course, a finale that lasts a mere two minutes.

These kinds of genre films are actually quite enjoyable. You might already know what you're in for, but they rarely disappoint. The lightheartedness and humor make these films very easy to digest. I'm not so keen on the dance and music, but I'm prepared for that by now.

Rogers and Astaire remain a great film couple; the film has a good pace and doesn't last too long. It's a fun little interlude, and much easier to digest than many of its contemporaries.

Just as I've finished watching the three Astaire-Rogers DVDs in my collection, the BBC has come to my rescue by airing the only film by this duo I hadn't yet seen. The basic premise isn't fundamentally different (Fred falls in love with Ginger, but she mistakes his lightheartedness for superficiality, forcing him to pull out all the stops musically to pry her away from a fiancé whose only sins are script-mandated shortsightedness and insipidity), but the big difference is that Rogers gets far more opportunity to show what she's capable of as an actress, both in her comedic talents and when trying to hide her true feelings, and I have to say, I've never found her better (just as mrklm is praising her above). Carefree also differs from their previous films in other ways: less dancing and music, more surrealism (including a dream sequence with somewhat eerie slow-motion), a theme (the subconscious) that I think was becoming increasingly fashionable in those years, and therefore a greater focus on Rogers. It is also a somewhat slower and shorter film than usual, with two highlights (Astaire playing with golf balls, and the dancing at The Yam in and through the restaurant), but as a whole it is somewhat less dazzling than, for example, Top hat and Shall we dance.
