Not really seen under ideal circumstances: a French film, dubbed in English (as Deep in the woods) and with Indonesian subtitles "fixed" on the DVD as if it were a digitized video tape, and judging by the image quality that could well be the case (although the aspect ratio is the correct 1:2.35). Still, even in that form this is a not bad film, with certainly in the beginning (during the meal) a nice alienating atmosphere and reasonable acting by a nice cast. Later on the plot unfortunately moves more in the direction of the slasher, with shock effects, blood and some close-ups of the (covered) breasts of the beautiful Maud Buquet; perhaps the original psychological approach would have been more interesting, because now this is ultimately not much more than a nice genre exercise. Because the music occasionally reminded me of Goblin, the film got a bit of an Argento vibe, but I still don't think it is at that level.

Nice.

This relatively unknown French slasher had been off my radar for most of my life because I simply did not know the film. Recently I suddenly saw the film among the horror films that Netflix offers, and it seemed fun. Recently I actually saw it and the film certainly did not disappoint.

Despite the fact that the film has a rather unusual image quality for a release via Netflix, it is largely enjoyable to watch, although for such a short film it takes a relatively long time before the film really lives up to its genre. The largest part of this film clearly consists of weirdness. It is not really over the top, but it is pleasantly different and strange. I like it, and French cinema is not averse to it either.

Furthermore, the film looks good audiovisually. Strong color filters and well-constructed scenes with an eye for detail and beauty. The film is well-cared for and director Delplanque pays attention to both the sound and what is presented to the viewer. However, this film is not without its drawbacks.

Mainly the slow pace of the story and especially the acting of the good guys. Delplanque seems to expect too much from his actors and asks a lot of their roles, but it doesn't really work. It sometimes feels downright uncomfortable how poorly the actors play their roles, and the fact that the cast is not even that unknown makes it even more disappointing.

It is also a pity that the film deviates from real gore or bloody murders, in that respect this film actually remains very safe and that is always a pity. Still, what is presented can be called quite nice and I do not regret having seen this film. The audiovisual quality of the film manages to save it as a whole, but in terms of content it is perhaps a bit weaker and as a whole a bit too distant to be really good.

The beginning is quite nice, with that Little Red Riding Hood theme, a somewhat sinister castle, a strange lord of the castle, an even stranger boy and a lesbian couple. But after half an hour, little has actually happened and then the film starts to derail with events that can no longer be reconciled and the many questions are not filled in. Missed opportunity.
