Woman They Almost Lynched plot

"KATE QUANTRILL...rode like a man...killed like a man...and LOVED like the beautiful woman she was!"

In the spring of 1865, Sally Maris (Joan Leslie) arrives in the rough town of Border City on the Missouri-Arkansas border, where she plans to visit her brother. Border City turns out to be a gathering place for bandits, including Quantrill's (Brian Donlevy) gang. When her brother, the saloon owner, is murdered, Sally is left alone and penniless. In order to survive, she is forced to reopen her brother's saloon.

Western based on a story from the Saturday Evening Post, but above all a western in which women call the shots.

It is therefore not surprising that romance is given a lot of space and also some singing and humor, but unfortunately little depth.

But love and generosity that transcend civil war should not come as a surprise to Americans, even if it is all very unlikely.

An oddball western, but still mediocre

For all those who thought Johnny Guitar was the first gender-bender western, Woman They Almost Lynched by B-movie luminary Dwan (a misunderstood author if we are to believe the eminent Jean-Claude Biette) came out a good year earlier! The film is set during the American Civil War in a town where a gang of puritanical Pilgrim Mothers rule the roost under the leadership of a corpulent matriarch who wants to maintain 'neutrality'. On this North-South fault line, another contrast emerges, namely between the protagonist and the antagonist: the red-haired Sunday school teacher who even lectures outlaws like Jesse James (demoted to a beta male sidekick in this feminist gem) and involuntarily becomes a saloon owner versus the hyper-sexualized bandit queen with angular Germanic features who has joined a gang of Confederate Guerrillas, bye bye male WASP hegemony of the Wild West. After a few serious catfights, the film seems to be heading for an eruption of hormones and violence, but in the end Dwan – as the title suggests – opts for conviviality and reconciliation. The civil war ends, the 'neutral' town unites in the saloon to sing Dixie together, even the biggest pillar-biters start drinking. And John Ford saw that it was good.

Border City during the American Civil War. The town has neutral status and does not allow Northern or Southern troops within an 8-mile border around the town. The mayor is a woman. A so-called Kenau who rules with an iron fist and does not hesitate to hang a troublemaker.

In Woman They Almost Lynched, women play the leading roles. The absolute leading role is for the modest Sally Maris (Joan Leslie), who takes over the hotel and saloon of her shot brother. Including the debts her brother has incurred. Including the female furnishings consisting of girls of pleasure. And so she is stuck in this place full of riffraff where immoral behavior is rampant. A place that is diametrically opposed to the prudishness and decency that Sally represents. Another important role is reserved for Kate, who is part of a male rebel group that occasionally frequents the town. And then there is the aforementioned mayor who rules the town with an iron fist. Three strong women. It takes some getting used to, but it is also nice to experience the women in a western not in a typical role as a meek supporting character.

The relatively short western offers entertaining viewing. Despite the heavy presence of women, the film does not hold back with regard to shootouts, fist fights and fights on horseback. A beautiful scene is a bar fight between Sally and Kate. It is striking, by the way, that in the film a gunshot wound is not accompanied by blood. Furthermore, it is funny how the actors exaggerate when they are hit by a bullet. Definitely not high school theater.

Oh well, it's not that bad. It's just a fun movie.
