Not a relaxing thriller, with some Hitchcock elements, and of course lots of "Don't Look Now" quotes. Another actress had made more of it than Demi Moore, who rolls through the film quite expressionless. Too much botox? The music deserved a better movie.

Story within a story, a book within a film or a film from a book, a writer who herself plays the leading role in a series of bouquets. With all the required elements in the plot - a little drama, a little horror, a dash of romance and a few twists. Oh and of course just a little too much rattles. But that doesn't really matter, because the beautiful coast of Scotland, sorry it is actually Wales, provides very nice pictures. Demi Moore draws the crowd, but is occasionally a bit uninspired - her opponents are actually more interesting. Also a supporting role by Kate Isitt, I wish it could have been a bit bigger - but no, she really doesn't play a double role, the other lady is Therese Bradley. It's a mystery to me how anyone can confuse those two, they don't look alike at all.

Not much else going on, but still enjoyable to watch.

Truly the kind of movie where I went by the plot description and hoped it would be as exciting as it sounded. That turned out pretty well I must say. After all, Half Light exactly lived up to expectations. Such a remote village in Scotland where someone goes alone already has something grim in itself, but it's nice that it is also well developed. The images look very atmospheric at times.

Don't expect extreme horror though. The 'scary' moments are mainly reflected in the mystical atmosphere and a bloody climax. The film has a nice structure and also manages to become really exciting in the long run. In particular, some plot twists that make you start to doubt yourself make it fun. I read some mixed reviews about Demi Moore in the lead role, but I thought she did a great job. I found her playing together with Hans Matheson convincing and other bit parts by Kate Isitt and James Cosmo were also good. Also nice to see Henry Ian Cusick again; fine actor who provided added value in both Lost and The 100 (as here).

If I have to say anything about the film, it may not always be believable. It's still limited though, so if you're aware that you're going to be watching a fictional story, I'm assuming it won't hinder the viewing experience. Furthermore, it is all a bit too simple to really call it a masterpiece, but this is without a doubt a very pleasant thriller that made me feel all the emotions that I thought were intended. For that reason alone I would definitely recommend this.

3.5*
