I typed my jubilation from some of the posts above pretty soon after I saw the movie. Visually I also find it quite interesting, but I can still remember that it hardly helped me the days after. I gave it a nine but something really bothered me. And a review explained to me in great detail what.

The songs are beautifully sung but don't stick. Even more important; I don't like any of the characters. They are arrogant, selfish, obnoxious and they will stay that way. I don't care at all how they end up. And why shouldn't they pay rent...?

So no, my words of praise were not really about the content at all. I don't really have a problem with how this musical was captured on film. With the musical itself, yes. And nowadays these kind of songs are not the ones I would put on again.

No, the next time Flip just 'runs away' when Chris Columbus' Rent is shown.

I first saw the musical on stage and then this movie. A very moving emotional film. One of the best musicals of recent decades. Jonathan Larson wrote the musical with a mix between La Bohème by Puccini and his own life. You also notice that sincerity full of emotions and at the same time topicality. Together with a strong coat rack by the Puccini opera.

Too bad it's in the hands of Chris Columbus, not exactly a strong director. He doesn't bring much to the musical and does a pretty decent translation. But luckily the cast does a good job, the story remains emotional and the songs are very strong. In theater this got more creative and that is less the case in the hands of Columbus. So there could have been more to this, but anyway this is fun and it remains a very nice story.
