a tragic story about a man (welles) who signs up for service in the 1st world war, his wife does not agree but lets him go anyway.
Disfigured beyond recognition, he is declared dead but he lives. Out of shame he does not want to reveal his identity, but 20 years later he returns from Austria just before the start of the Second World War to America under a different name.
His wife has now married someone else, not knowing that he is still alive.
He ends up working for her new husband, will the truth be revealed?
Without revealing the ending, I can only say that I did not really like the ending, nevertheless it is a strong drama with strong performances by both Colbert and Welles in a compelling story.
