The Lost City plot

"A place you leave is a place that lives forever."

Havana, Cuba, is a bustling city in 1958 with lots of fun to be had for those who can afford it. But underground, the opponents of dictator Fulgencio Batista unite. The wealthy Fellove family belongs to the first group; eldest son Fico even owns El Tropico, the most beautiful nightclub in the city. Yet the revolutionary idea wins out over wealth, because one by one, Fico's brothers let themselves be won over to the cause of Fidel Castro and Ernesto "Che" Guevara. Fico fears for the future of his club under the new regime and struggles with how to keep his family and great love. Together with his comic family friend and writer, he has to watch as Cuban culture fades and people change instantly. Fico is swept up by the sweeping developments of his country and becomes involved in the revolution much more deeply than desired. In the end, Fico even has to ask himself whether he can work any longer in his beloved nightclub.

Garcia's attempt at an epic drama in the vein of The Godfather and Once Upon a Time in America unfortunately falls short of pretty pictures and good intentions.

The film never really becomes compelling. However, the viewer is bored with an unnecessarily drawn-out romantic escapade that takes up the bulk of the middle section. Furthermore, the film (especially in the beginning) is very disjointed and rambles on quite a bit (it took me almost 45 minutes to realize it was about three brothers!). This immediately makes any empathy a bit harder, and the fact that most of the characters seem to act somewhat out of the blue doesn't help matters either.

By the way, court jester Murray and mafiosi Hoffman were quite superfluous in my opinion.

What's left? Nice local color, a decent performance by Garcia, and some stunningly beautiful women. 2.5* could have been much better.

First the good, the music and atmosphere were very good and had a Cuban feel to it, so that was fine.

The cast was also excellent: Andy Garcia, Bill Murray (not a major role), and Dustin Hoffman (a very small one), though it was Andy Garcia who really took the cake. He was convincing, though.

The downsides of this film were its running time and the story. It all dragged on a bit too long, and there were some dull and tedious parts.

Well, I watched it all, but the film still didn't completely convince me.

Garcia attempts an epic drama.

And it fails miserably. The placement is already flawed—I can't quite put my finger on it, but it never felt like it was actually set in Cuba. Nor did the threat of revolution register with me. Like the difference between a short story and an epic.

Andy Garcia plays well enough, not exactly one of my favorite actors, but that's not the problem. It's more that his role doesn't come alive, his emotions aren't visible or palpable. Too cold, and that's not what I expected.
