A decent rural drama that just never becomes truly moving. The thin story meanders along without ever becoming truly surprising.
Not much happens in the first hour. Director Jan Gruyaert essentially introduces you to the so-called 'flax culture'. However, in the last half hour, the two thin storylines pick up speed and there are some dramatic developments, but even then, the film fails to move you.
A few beautiful shots combined with the music by Van Otterloo and the well-acting Dora van der Groen make the film still reasonably worthwhile.

A film from a time when a Flemish film could only be about village and rural life from many years ago.
The value of De Vlaschaard (not to mention the film adaptation of a literary work) therefore lies in the beautiful portrayal of this rural life as well as in the beautiful photography.
One simply has to accept the lack of suspense and a real story.
Still an impressive piece of work.
