Pitch-black comedy set in New York, an unpleasant, unsafe city to live in in the 1970s. Elliot Gould plays Alfred Chamberlain, a cynical photographer who literally takes it all in his stride when he lets himself be beaten up by two men who - Alfred claims - were looking for an excuse to beat him up. He is not even grateful when local resident Patsy [Marcia Rodd] comes to his rescue because 'they were just getting tired'. The tone is set: Alfred has become so worn down by life in New York that he has become completely apathetic "I don't know what love is!", he sighs several times when Patsy, for dubious reasons, decides to win Alfred over.

Jules Feiffer, adapting his own play, has succeeded beautifully in creating a screenplay that is often hilarious, but always has a depressing undertone that supports the central theme: the indifference of a society that nevertheless desperately tries to hold on to traditional but hollow norms and values. Full of sharp observations and awkwardly humorous moments (Donald's introduction to Patsy's family is a highlight) played by a perfect cast. Gould co-produced this film a year after MASH, a film that shows many similarities in terms of theme and central character (Alfred could easily be the alter-ego of "Trapper" John McIntyre). Donald Sutherland has a hilarious cameo as an unconventional minister, as does Alan Arkin - who also directed - as an equally unusual detective. A film that gives food for thought but is extremely entertaining from start to finish.

Reasonable film in which a woman decides to marry a rather nihilistic man. Rather fragmentary in structure and the whole is somewhat incoherent. But with a unique humor that provides a few funny scenes (including a few excellent monologues). Directorial debut of actor Alan Arkin who also has a role himself.
