In the late 1960s, teenage girl Harriet Frankvitz (Evan Rachel Wood) wants nothing more than to flee her drab life in the countryside. She has an alcoholic mother, an oversexed sister and her classmates think she is strange. She would like to dig a hole all the way to China, in the hope that someone will understand her. But then she meets Ricky (Kevin Bacon), a 30-year-old mentally retarded man. She seems to have found a soul mate in him.
