Stylish Japanese horror about unknown danger and paranoia.

Apparently so stylish to be used by film geek Tarantino in his airplane segment in Kill Bill: Airplane and a fire red background with the final destination: Okinawa.

The killer is straight out of a Mario Bava movie, including musical accompaniment. You don't see them like that anymore these days, killers with flair and dramatic sense.

What makes this film different from the bulk Invasion of... films is the self-reflection. Unprocessed war traumas in one to reintroduce the law of the strongest. Even in hopeless situations, paranoia prevails for the other, something that the alien danger eagerly exploits.

And all that in a beautiful Technicolor palette.

You shouldn't expect too much depth, but this is definitely a great SF/Horror. In terms of sets, I was reminded of Star Trek (the original TV series) and Damnation Alley.

Man shows his best side here, if that layer of civilization falls away then .... and yes there is also reference to Vietnam and the atomic bomb and that is also just human civilization.

Spaceship and alien make a serious effort for the design prize and the effects are extremely effective (and sometimes a bit transparent, but that also has its charm). Tempo is good, as far as I'm concerned: highly recommended!

Great horror/science fiction for its time. An isolated small group of people is threatened by an external danger and that is naturally a recipe for a lot of tension. Psychology therefore plays a major role in mutual relationships. On the other hand, there is a socially critical layer. The link with that time is very clear. It already starts with the introduction to the murder of the British ambassador. This was also the time of the Kennedy assassinations. And then there are the numerous references to the Vietnam War, up to and including the presence of a traumatized widow of an American GI. In the editing of certain images, the Japanese war trauma of the atomic bombs also surfaces. The message is made very explicit towards the end. So it is a film that works on 2 levels and I can certainly taste that. The fx may also be there, is pretty much the level of Star Trek from then.
