Cagliostro - Liebe und Leben eines großen Abenteurers plot

In an age of alchemy, witchcraft and revolution we find a small number of people who can rightly be called a magician. Nostradamus, Count of Saint-Germain, Gurdjieff, Swedenborg, Count Cagliostroac: all possess a gift that is mistaken for magic by their contemporaries. Although they have been mistaken for impostors and quacks just as often, and sometimes have been, it seems that they had something that made them different: clairvoyance, visions, psychic healings...

Cagliostro was an Italian clairvoyant or charlatan in the eighteenth century. Here he is portrayed sympathetically, as someone who protests injustice and predicts the fall of the French monarchy.

The romantic story incorporates several historical figures. Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette make appearances, as does Countess Jeanne de la Motte. The latter stole an expensive necklace with six hundred and forty-seven diamonds by posing as the queen.

This German-French coproduction was long thought lost. The version restored by the Cinémathèque Française is unfortunately incomplete, about half the length of the original. A nude scene, censored at the time, was preserved separately. The restoration is very well done.

Richard Oswald was an Austrian director. His French assistant director, the young Marcel Carné, would become much more famous. Visually, the eighteenth century is impressively depicted, with wigs, bayonets, chandeliers, and Louis XVI furniture.
