Quite nice.

The film starts off pretty well. A man ends up in a village, falls in love with a woman who makes paper, and then some strange things start to happen.

Because of the sometimes quite beautiful shots (like; The tree/cave scene and when he gets dizzy) and the calm atmosphere it is quite watchable. Only I expected and hoped for an exciting climax. But unfortunately that was not in it, the ending was rather messy and a bit rushed,

Still quite nice but could have been more. - 3*

Remains valid under revision.

In the meantime I have seen much more of Harada and he is just a very interesting director. It is a bit strange that this film has ever found its way to the West, but at that time people were not yet aware of Japanese cinema, only that it was a hype, so then you occasionally got these kinds of random releases (was praised as a horror film if I remember correctly).

So you shouldn't expect that, but an atmospheric and unique genre mix where tradition and mystery find each other, with here and there indeed some darker edges. In itself it is also quite impressive that Harada can make a film about papermakers quite exciting and even sensual.

Actors do a more than decent job (but no familiar faces here), the film looks neat (less stiff than you would think) and the soundtrack also does a nice bit of good. Just a very nice, different and challenging film.

4.0* and an extensive review

Fine folkloric Japanese film somewhere deep in the interior where traditional values and mysticism come to the surface. Cinematographically very handsome, visually strong with some successful beautiful scenes. Interesting also to highlight a craft unknown to me as paper makers.

Stylish and a film that quietly continues. At times a bit too quiet and a bit too little swing, but then there is still enough to pull you up.
