John le Carré with a queer sauce. Disappointed in love for the umpteenth time, protagonist Danny (Ben Whishaw) stumbles upon a mysterious stranger during his nocturnal wanderings. He is struck by how this Alex (Edward Holcroft) radiates on the one hand the hardness of someone who has seen a lot of life, while on the other hand he has an insecure and sensitive side. However, that love in which everything seems to make sense is abruptly interrupted when Alex disappears from the face of the earth and Danny becomes embroiled in intrigue in his search for answers. Script writer Tom Rob Smith is best known for his Leo Demidov trilogy. What I like about Smith's books is that he uses lesser-known histories to outline the ideologies within which intelligence agencies should operate. For example, he clearly sets 'London Sky' (2015) against the hypocritical and traumatizing dealings with homosexual agents. A coming-out and a disappearance bring that homophobic legacy back to modern times, because the double standards still slumber in the background.
