"Everybody's back for a fresh cut"

It's been over ten years since we last made an appointment at Calvin Palmer's (Ice Cube) barbershop. Calvin and his staff still work there, but the place has gone through some major changes over time. Most notably, the area that was once dominated by males has now become a mixed zone.

Unfortunately, this film is a bit of a failure. I have seen all four parts (including the spin-off Beautyshop) and this is the least of the series. The pleasant fun from the first part in particular can only be found in small doses. What dominates is a deadly serious but mediocrely developed theme about violence in Chicago. In addition, all kinds of characters are introduced, usually actors who are friends of Ice Cube, who are simply not nice enough for a comedy, and whose performance contrasts considerably with the violence present in the background. The best moment is in the end credits, when the president comes by for a haircut, so if you are so unwise as to spend more than an hour and a half on this incoherent disappointment, at least stay until the very end.

Ten years have passed since Barbershop: Back In Business and Calvin [Ice Cube] has teamed up with women’s hairstylist Angie [Regina Hall], making the barbershop on Chicago’s South Side a place where men and women are equally welcome. But neighborhood violence is a cause for concern. Calvin worries that his son Jaden [Michael Rainey Jr.] is being negatively influenced by Kenny [Diallo Thompson], the son of Calvin’s good friend Rashad [Common]. Relationships are strained, but the barbershop still proves to be a place where different opinions and sometimes even arch enemies can come together to improve the neighborhood. Writers Kenya Barris and Tracy Oliver do a great job of portraying each character. Lee provides the perfect mix of comedy, social drama, rhetoric and crime drama, and Ice Cube is ideal as the community’s moral compass.
