Like some here, we didn't have too many expectations from this film, it seemed to be one like many, but it was a pleasant surprise while watching. The film is well put together and the acting is reasonably convincing. Story is good for a horror and there are also a few "human creeps" that are convincingly embraced by the "other side".

We actually wanted to put a plus behind these 6, unfortunately that is not possible.

Idea is better than execution.

The film was clearly made by someone who has a feel for the genre. The clichés that occur in large quantities in the first hour are actually mainly there to support the twist at the end. In terms of idea, that's funny, but Wilson never gets his film fully on track.

Partly comes from Ferland. Not that she's doing a bad job, but she's playing someone who's scared before there's anything to be scared of. Wilson then tries to build some tension from that, but too often it leads nowhere or the tension is already broken before the payoff. Too bad, because that makes it a bit bland.

Furthermore, it looks like a haunted house movie, but there is also a lot of borrowing elsewhere. You have a Damien-like child, a house invasion side plot, because demonic stuff and the weird handyman. It is a mishmash of horror ideas that ultimately have to hide that the whole haunted house thing is just a cover-up for "other side"ers who are allowed to exercise their powers here as a training school. It's an amusing punch line that puts a lot of other horror movies in a different light (the link to Amityville at the end isn't exactly subtle), but it never quite works.

I didn't think it was bad, Wilson knows what he is doing, only the finishing is lacking. He wants to make it a little too exciting, so it's never really exciting. And for a film that plays with clichés, it is not tongue-in-cheek enough. Still, it is sometimes funny to see for the horror enthusiast, but more could have been done with this.

2.5*

Particularly mediocre horror film that does not shy away from the clichés. Especially the least original, the jump scare, is used all the time. A jump scare can be quite effective or cool, but not in the capacity and extent to which it is MISused here. Jogging through a quiet and deserted house.. and then a 'sudden' something like a door slamming shut on its own or someone suddenly standing behind you.. followed by a sudden loud noise? Come on, we already know that. It's just too easy, level my 5-year-old daughter who likes to shout BOO really loud in my ear when I'm dozing off. Fortunately, this is a horror film, the only genre in which a bad film still remains somewhat watchable.
