With eight Chinese actors, screenwriters, film crew and academics, we look back on the rise and fall of the Chinese Model Operas (Yang Ban Xi's) during the Cultural Revolution. Seated in the beautiful original Yang Ban Xi sets, they tell candidly and in detail about their experiences in their heyday in the middle of the much-maligned Cultural Revolution. For some it was actually the best time of their lives. These stories about the past are intersected with images from the unadorned reality of today. Stories of how these 8 people live now, people's lives now in the cities of China, on the eve of full participation in the western world: modern China.
