October 1942. A French commando succeeds in blowing up several German army fuel depots in Tobruk. However, there are only four survivors of the commando and they flee. In the morning they meet again in the middle of the desert. They seem lost but feel saved.

A solid anti-militaristic print, although I sometimes found it tedious and even difficult to watch. Four French soldiers get lost in the Libyan desert and capture a German officer, with whom they gradually fraternize. The film mainly relies on fine, sometimes comical dialogues and a remarkably light-hearted tone. Also heavyweight Lino Ventura, a monumental actor of French cinema. The ending is surprising.

I'm not really convinced about this movie.
Although 4 enemies are cold-bloodedly shot down in the beginning, the majority of it proceeds as a kind of unwanted comedy. Do understand the filmmaker's intention: here we do not pay tribute to a heroic group of fighters, but to man in his unfamiliarity, with his "little" character traits, his ignorance, dropped into a war situation that becomes more and more dramatic. The final scene is significant: no interest in the parade and the glory after victory, but the realization that there is no place for all this in war.
