I had reasonable expectations, but was disappointed. Unlike Jimbo79, I didn't find the main character undeniably strong: sometimes I thought "hey, he can act well" but then he had moments when his feelings didn't come across at all. So changing. It also irritated me when Santiago told a long story about his naval time, at inappropriate times. However, since I can imagine that was the intention - he is quite bitter about society - I could get over it.

The only really positive thing is the fact that his lethargy was portrayed very well. The whole movie radiated that feeling. But is that the only thing?

A resounding yes.

Santiago's character is not explored in depth, he remains a character. There could have been so much more resident...

You could say: "all the film tries is to convey Santiago's despair and listlessness to the viewer. And it succeeds quite well."

But that doesn't work for me. I want depth, but everything remains superficial. Unfortunately.

2*

Santiago has a hard time adjusting to civilian life after returning as a soldier after a long guerrilla war. His neighbors do not understand him and it is difficult for him to find work. He is paranoid and sees an enemy behind every corner. For example, he always drives home via a different road and he always looks behind him.

Mendez uses different techniques to create an oppressive feeling by working with close-ups and using black and white images. Stylish in itself, although I could no longer distinguish between color and black and white. There was an excess so that the effect no longer came across. Santiago's despair and frustration surfaced only in fragments. Dias de Santiago is a decent film, but unfortunately it was not used to its full potential.

Actually agree with previous review because the alternating use of black / white and color is stylish, but offers no added value to the story at all. The close-ups and movements of Santiago also do not have the intended effect. It also takes a while before the film gets going and when you think now the madness is about to begin, the end credits suddenly appear. Nevertheless, the film from Peru still manages to remain interesting enough because of the way of filming and because of the protagonist. Expectations were higher! 6/10
