Memorable film adaptation of Hemingway's book about the misadventures of an ambulance soldier and a nurse during World War I. As so often in his films, Borzage focuses on the heartbreaking love between the two. With Gary Cooper and Helen Hayes, he has the ideal actors for this. For Cooper, this film was the big breakthrough. Little Hayes impressively shows what she has to offer as an actress in the haunting death scene. It's a pity that after a handful of films in Hollywood she gave up to celebrate unprecedented successes on Broadway.

A romantic war movie that was good enough for 2 Oscars and 1 NBR Award. This was also the first novel by Ernest Hemingway to be made into a film. The story takes place from February to November 4, 1918.

Ruth Chatterton, Claudette Colbert and Eleanor Boardman were considered for the role of Catherine Barkley, but it was ultimately assigned to Helen Hayes. In her biography, Hayes later admitted that she had a crush on Gary Cooper. John Cromwell was originally supposed to direct this film, but he was replaced by Frank Borzage. Cromwell's absence led to Fredric March also dropping out of the lead role of Lt. Frederick Henry. Unfortunately, Tom Ricketts' character never appeared in this movie. Some theaters were offered 2 versions. The big difference was the ending of the film, in which Hayes' character died or lived. Hemingway was of course not amused. In 1957 a new film adaptation was released directed by Charles Vidor and John Huston. A remake was made in 1966 and released as a mini-series.

The romance is over the top, but all in all I enjoyed this film adaptation.

3.0 *

Romance at the front.

Today's film fan will not get his money's worth with this. However, the film was conceived at the time with Oscars and ditto nominations.

In fact, one should be able to place oneself in the skin and brain of that happy cinemagoer from those crisis years, where the memory of WWI was still very vivid and there was still room in the middle of all that misery for a beautiful and, for that time, certainly touching love story.

I don't know if the movie follows Hemingway's novel perfectly, but the wish "Never again war" is very clear.

Finally got a 3.5 for it.
