Saw it yesterday and I wasn't really convinced.

First of all, I never once felt like the film was set in 1944. To give the viewer the impression of being in World War II, they decided to hang a few Hitler portraits, which was a bit of a stretch. And yes, I have to agree with the others: German characters should just speak German.

Furthermore, the film had too many unnecessary scenes just to increase its length. That wouldn't be so bad in itself, but the scenes were completely uninteresting. The story has only two or three noteworthy moments, and to stretch them out over 110 minutes...

Then there's the clergyman, a character who didn't really fit into the film. The director could have focused more on portraying Burton effectively.

Overall, the film felt a bit forced. The ending, in my opinion, only heightened the film's dramatic quality. 2 stars.

Still a nice film with a good story.

The acting was reasonable, only the absence of the German language was a pity.

A reconstruction of the attack that led to the reprisal murder of 300 Italians in a nearby cave during the German occupation of Rome. Yet another Nazi atrocities. The film plays with the famous Nuremberg excuse (we were merely following orders) and the Pope's passive attitude. There's a chapter I wasn't familiar with, but it's presented dryly. It lacks staging, atmosphere, and flow. It all lapses into emotion towards the end. It's also strange that Richard Burton stars here as SS officer Kappler, who is then given an inappropriate touch of chivalry to give the impression he truly had no control over the incident. No, this war drama isn't the best. The attack itself on the Via Rasella was a good scene, a rare moment in the film.
