Nick Magellan works for corrupt businessman Charlie Lupo, who runs an influential crime syndicate in Manhattan, New York. New York senators are within the syndicate's sphere of influence. Charlie has a recalcitrant daughter, Kathy Lupo, whom Nick is in love with. Nick protects Kathy from his client and friend of his dead father when she leaves her parental home. Charlie always manages to stay out of the courts, but when one of the senators blows out of the school during a TV interview, he becomes the center of a large-scale fraud investigation.

Typical and unforgiving film noir from Russell Rouse, quite at home in this genre.
To create treason, indiscretion, weakness or a compromising situation, they call illegal, the retaliatory murder that follows in full accordance with the laws of the "syndicate" and as a matter of course.
Among themselves they call each other "boys", but their friendship is as fleeting as gas.
Good film with a very solid Richard Conte as the obedient, cool killer with yet a touch of sentiment in his innermost core.

Great crime film with (Conte) as an ice-cold killer who is employed by the boss (Crawford), a typical role of him in which we again see his characteristic hot-headedness.
The drama part is mainly taken care of by the rebellious daughter who wants nothing to do with daddy's practices.
I know Anna Bancroft mainly in her older roles (mainly from The Graduate of course), funny to see her playing so young now.
Far from a happy ending but that's actually part of a film like this
