Strange western, filmed in beautiful, desolate locations in Utah and with a beautiful finale. The story in which former bounty hunter Willett Gashade [Warren Oates] returns to the mine that he built with a number of people. There appears to have been a shootout that was only survived by the not-so-bright Coley [Will Hutchines] and Willett's brother, but he has disappeared without a trace. Shortly afterwards they encounter a mysterious woman [Millie Perkins] who convinces both men to escort her, although she remains vague about the exact purpose of her trip.

The "Unequalled climax" mentioned on the poster is correct, even though it is somewhat reminiscent of the finale of Duel In The Sun. What precedes it is certainly mysterious, but not particularly intriguing. Monte Hellman's direction also regularly poses riddles, for example when he only films the lower legs of the two main characters during a scene - without any demonstrable reason. It is not so strange that this western has a cult following, but the real reasons for this only become clear in the much-discussed (and impressive) final confrontation.

Warren Oates carries this film all by himself, with a great 'performance'. Millie Perkins is indeed annoying as hell, but that is of course according to the script, and Jack Nicholson plays the role of the brat he so often portrays. This film is very slow in build-up, very little happens and only at the very end do you find out the purpose of the quest of the four horsemen. Occasionally beautiful shots in the desert and beautiful horses. Not bad for a low budget film.

A small lesser known western but what a western. The plot is driven by a mystery as it is not clear what the motives are of the unnamed woman and later the gunfighter played by Jack Nicholson. Nicholson joins in the second half of the film and immediately increases the tension level with his threatening presence and charisma. The setting in the Utah desert fits in with every film with existential themes and that is no different in this western. Good script with an original finale, good acting performances and beautifully portrayed. It is a western from the time when Hollywood is in full transition. Not a classic western, not yet a revisionist western, but more like western noir.
